St. Tammany Parish is lucky to have a great resource in the area child safety seat fitting stations. The stations are located at Louisiana State Police Troop L, Mandeville Fire Dept., The STP Hospital Parenting Center, The Sheriff's Office in Slidell, The Slidell Fire Dept., and at Lakeview Regional Medical Center. Contact info is below. A certified child passenger safety technician will show you how to correctly install your car seat and advise you on the best type of seat for your child's age and weight. And it's free!
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission has a great website with resources for parents and caregivers at the Child Passenger Seat page, opens a new window. In addition to learning that the first car seat was invented in 1921 for the Ford Model T (basically a sack with string!), you can learn about the Child Passenger Safety Task Force, learn about the laws and rules for passenger restraints, learn some sobering statistics, and access free publications and resources.
