International Museum Day, opens a new window is May 18. The International Council of Museums, opens a new window (ICOM) announces a theme for each year. This year's theme is "Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition". International Museum Day began in 1977 and according to the ICOM, opens a new window, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples". So what is a museum? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, opens a new window, a museum is "an institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value". Now that we know what a museum is, what types of museums are there? There are general museums, natural history museums, natural science museums, science and technology museums, history museums, art museums, local history museums, war museums, subject specific museums, and more.
