Celebrate the connection between artistic expression and the human condition with World Art Day this April 15th. The first World Art Day was created in 2012 by the International Association of Art in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate artists, artistic freedom and arts' role in society and the formation of culture. According to Dictionary.com, art is defined as "the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance." Art encompasses many different mediums and forms and can mean different things for different people around the world.
April 15th was chosen because it is the birthday of Leonardo di Vinci, one of the most famous and influential artists of all time. He was also talented in the fields of engineering, architecture, math, and philosophy and is one of the reasons we use the term "Renaissance man" to denote individuals who are gifted in many different areas of study.
This day is also used to highlight the importance of art education and funding in schools and the power art has to unite and connect us. The first World Art Day celebration in the United States of America was held in Los Angeles in 2015. This year they will host a month-long celebration of five local artists at the Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery.
