Join us as we survey the work and motivation of venerable African American poets throughout history beginning in colonial times and ending in the black arts explosion of the 60’s and 70’s during "Sonnets for Those Behind the Veil: A Reading & Exploration of the Struggle of Africans in American (African-American) Poetry" from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, February 9, at the Madisonville Branch.
Presenter James Riley is a poet and lecturer from San Diego, CA. His varied experience, education and travel have given him a unique perspective on birth, death and everything in between. The lecture will seek to raise the level of appreciation for the varying struggles of peoples of African descent in America as captured in the poetry of Phillis Wheatley, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni and others.
The event is free and open to the public. Seating space is limited to adults. Registration is encouraged. Register online or call the library at (985) 845-4819 to register.
