Fifty years ago on July 20, 1969, families and friends all over the country gathered in front of television sets to watch the historic moon walk by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. The library invites all to a special program to recreate some of that excitement and to celebrate the achievement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, at the Slidell Library. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., a 45 minute segment of the historic CBS live feed of the moon landing will be shown. The film footage will repeat at 11:00 a.m., noon and 1:00 p.m. The event is open to families, teens and adults. Those who remember watching the event 50 years ago are invited to share their experience and memories with the audience.
Other activities include crafts for kids and the Star Lab. The Star Lab is a portable planetarium that will be set up inside the library. Staff from Northshore Technical College will present a 30 minute sky show. Seating is limited in the Star Lab, so please register in advance for a time slot to save your seat. There will be five time slots and registration will open on July 1. All ages are invited to the Star Lab, but the program is geared to ages 4 to 104.
The event is a celebration so cake and lemonade will be served. Please call the branch for details. Please inform the librarian of any food allergies at least one week in advance. We are happy to make accommodations for you. Children ages 9 and under may not be left unattended at any St. Tammany Parish Library.
